Why Gretna homes need gutter guards

Gretna is the fastest-growing city in Nebraska, up more than 200 percent since 2000, and the housing shows it: over half of it went up after the year 2000 in subdivisions like Whitetail Creek, Covington, Plum Creek and The Bend at Gretna. New construction is not the same as good drainage. Builder-grade gutters get sized to finish the house, not to move water off a big modern roof in a Nebraska downpour. The handful of original blocks near the old railroad town center are the opposite problem: rooflines that predate the whole idea of modern gutter sizing.

Gretna sits on eastern Nebraska loess, windblown silt over glacial till that streams have cut into rolling ground, so grade around a house here is rarely flat. The city is part of the Papillion Creek watershed, with the Platte and Elkhorn rivers not far off. On rolling lots, a downspout that dumps on the uphill side of a foundation causes more trouble than the gutter ever solves.
