5-Inch vs 6-Inch Gutters: Which Size Do You Need?

The real capacity difference between 5-inch and 6-inch gutters, how roof size and pitch decide it, and why the downspout you pair them with matters just as much.

Most homes get 5 inch gutters because that is what most homes get. It is the default, not a decision, and on plenty of houses it is the right answer anyway. But on a large roof, a steep roof, or a long run feeding one downspout, the default is what causes the overflow you are trying to fix.

Here is how to actually tell which size your house needs, and why the downspout matters as much as the gutter.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

The measurement is the width of the gutter opening at the top, on a K style profile, which is the shape that looks like crown molding from the street and is standard on nearly every American home.

A 5 inch K style gutter is five inches across the top. A 6 inch is six. That one inch sounds trivial, and it is not, because you are not adding an inch of width. You are adding cross sectional area along the entire length of every run on the house.

The Real Capacity Difference

The right way to think about gutter capacity is not gallons, it is drainage area: how much roof the system can handle before it gives up.

By that measure, This Old House’s sizing guide puts a 5 inch K style gutter at up to about 5,520 square feet of drainage area, and a 6 inch K style at about 7,960 square feet. That is roughly 44 percent more roof handled by the same shape one inch wider.

Capacity here is not about storage, since a gutter is a channel and not a tank. It is about headroom. In a hard rain the volume arriving briefly exceeds what the outlets can carry away, and the trough buffers the difference. When the buffer is too small, the excess goes over the front lip. That is what an overflowing gutter usually is: not necessarily a clog, but a system that ran out of headroom.

The Downspout Is Usually the Real Limit

Here is the part that surprises people: on most homes the gutter is not the bottleneck, the downspout is.

Per the same guide, drainage capacity by downspout runs:

A 5 inch gutter conventionally pairs with a 2x3 downspout and a 6 inch with a 3x4. Look at those numbers again: moving from 2x3 to 3x4 doubles the drainage area at that outlet. That is a far bigger jump than the gutter width gives you.

So if you put 6 inch gutters on a house and feed them into 2x3 downspouts, you have paid for a wider trough and kept the original restriction. The water still has to leave through the same hole.

This Old House also offers a simple rule worth remembering: a gutter run of 60 feet or longer should have at least two outlets. Long runs with a single downspout are one of the most common reasons a correctly sized gutter still overflows.

This is why “what size gutter” and “how many downspouts” are really the same question asked two ways.

Why Downspout Size Matters Beyond Capacity

There is a second reason the 3x4 is worth having, and it has nothing to do with the rated numbers.

A wider downspout is much harder to plug. Most of the “clogged gutter” calls we get are actually clogged downspout elbows, not clogged troughs, and a larger cross section tolerates more debris before it stops flowing. On newer construction where the roof is still shedding granules, that matters more than people expect.

If you take one thing from this article: ask any quote how many downspouts it includes and what size they are. A cheap quote very often hides right there.

When 6 Inch Is Worth It

Go bigger when any of these apply:

  • Large roof area draining to few points. The single most common reason.
  • Steep pitch. A steep roof does not slow water down. It delivers the same volume in less time, which is harder on the gutter than a gentle slope.
  • Long unbroken runs. A 50 foot run with one downspout at the end is asking a lot of a 5 inch channel.
  • Large valleys. A roof valley funnels a wide area into a narrow point, and the gutter under a valley outlet takes a beating in heavy rain.
  • You already overflow. If your current gutters spill over the front in every real storm and they are clean, they are undersized. Cleaning will not fix a capacity problem.
  • Metal roofing. Water sheets off metal faster than off shingle, arriving in a shorter, heavier burst.

When 5 Inch Is Genuinely Fine

Most single story homes with straightforward rooflines and a sensible number of downspouts do not need 6 inch, and paying for it is not an upgrade so much as an unused margin.

If your roof area per downspout is comfortably inside what 5 inch handles, your runs are moderate, and you are not seeing overflow in heavy rain, 5 inch K style is the correct spec. Spending the difference on an extra downspout, or on getting the pitch right, buys you more real performance than the wider trough would.

That is a genuine trade off, not a way of talking you out of the bigger product. We install both.

Signs Your Current Gutters Are Undersized

Undersizing and clogging look similar from the driveway. Here is how to tell them apart.

Probably undersized if water goes over the front edge during heavy rain but the gutters are clean, if it only happens in hard downpours and not light rain, if it overflows at the middle of a long run rather than at the ends, or if it consistently spills at the same spot below a valley.

Probably a clog if water overflows in light rain too, if it spills at the ends or near the downspout, if you can see debris or plants in the trough, or if one section overflows and the rest is fine.

Probably pitch if water stands in the gutter after the rain has stopped. That one is not a size problem at all, and no amount of extra width fixes it.

The first two are worth checking before you spend anything. If it turns out to be a clog, that is a cleaning. If a section is sagging and holding water, that is often a repair rather than a full replacement.

How Size Affects Gutter Guards

If guards are in your plans, decide the size first, because the two decisions interact.

Guards are made and priced per linear foot and are sized to the gutter, so a 6 inch system needs 6 inch guards. Installing 5 inch gutters now and deciding on guards later is fine. Installing 5 inch gutters, adding guards, and then discovering the gutters are undersized is the expensive path, because the guards have to come off and the replacements will not fit the new trough.

There is also a performance angle. A wider trough gives water more room to get past a partially loaded guard surface. On a 5 inch system running near capacity, adding a guard can be the thing that tips it into overflowing during a hard rain, because the guard surface itself is one more thing water has to get through. That is not an argument against guards, it is an argument for sizing the gutter correctly before you add one.

Does 6 Inch Look Too Big?

This comes up more than you would expect, and it is a fair question on a smaller home.

Six inch K style is visibly larger from the street, and on a small single story with modest trim it can look slightly heavy. On a two story, a home with substantial fascia, or anything with larger proportions, it usually looks correct rather than oversized. Plenty of homeowners never notice the difference at all once the color matches the trim.

The practical answer: if the roof genuinely needs 6 inch, take the capacity. An undersized gutter that overflows onto your foundation is a much more visible problem than a trough that is an inch wider than the neighbors’.

What the Size Difference Costs

Six inch gutter costs more per linear foot than 5 inch, and it needs the larger downspouts to be worth doing, so the delta is a bit more than the material alone.
