Aluminum vs Steel Gutters
The two common choices behave differently in a Nebraska winter, and the cheaper one is not always the cheaper one.
The short answer
Aluminum will not rust, is light enough to form on site into seamless runs, and is the default residential choice. Steel is stronger and takes an impact better, but it is heavier, harder to work, and will rust wherever its coating is broken.
Most residential gutter in this country is aluminum, and there are good reasons for that. Steel still has a case in specific situations. Here is the honest comparison.
Aluminum
It does not rust. Aluminum oxidizes rather than rusting, and that oxide layer protects what is underneath rather than flaking off and eating deeper. This is the single biggest argument for it.
It is light enough to form on site. This matters more than people realize. Aluminum coil can be run through a forming machine at your house and come out as one continuous length. That is what makes seamless gutters possible, and seamless means no joints along the run to leak. Steel is generally too heavy and stiff for that to be practical the same way.
It comes in colors. The finish is applied to the coil, so you get a factory color that does not need painting. We stock over 20.
The trade off: it dents. A ladder leaned in the wrong place, a heavy branch, hail. It is a soft metal and it will show damage that steel would shrug off.
Steel
It is stronger. Takes impact better, resists denting, and handles ladder abuse. On a house that gets a lot of branch fall, or where ladders go up often, that is worth something.
It handles heavy loads better. More rigid across a span, so it deforms less under a heavy ice or debris load.
The trade off, and it is the big one: it rusts. Galvanized steel is coated to prevent that, and the coating works until it is broken. A scratch, a cut end, a drilled fastener hole, or simple wear over years exposes bare steel, and from that point corrosion works outward. Gutters spend their lives full of wet debris, which is an ideal environment for it.
It is heavier, which puts more load on the same hangers and the same fascia board, so hanger spacing matters more.
It usually comes in sections rather than formed on site, which means more joints, and joints are where gutters leak.
Copper, briefly
Worth mentioning because people search it. Copper is a genuine architectural material: it lasts a very long time, it does not rust, and it weathers to a patina that some people want and others do not.
It is also considerably more expensive than either option above, and it is generally a choice made for appearance on the right house rather than on performance grounds.
What actually matters in a Nebraska winter
Neither material is the weak point here, and this is the part worth taking away.
Gutters in this metro fail from freeze and thaw acting on joints, fasteners and the fascia board. Water sitting in a trough freezes, expands, levers seams apart and works hangers loose. Omaha crosses freezing repeatedly through the season rather than freezing once and staying frozen, so that cycle runs many times each winter.
That process does not care much whether the trough is aluminum or steel. It cares whether the run drains properly, whether it was hung with enough hangers, and whether the wood behind is sound.
So if you are choosing between materials hoping one will last longer: the honest answer is that the decisions that determine lifespan are sizing, pitch, hanger spacing, and keeping the trough clear going into winter. Material is a long way down that list.
