Gutters Overflowing But Not Clogged
You cleaned them, you checked them, and they still spill. That rules out debris and leaves three real causes.
The short answer
A clean gutter that still overflows has a capacity or geometry problem, not a debris problem. The usual causes are a trough that is undersized for the roof, not enough downspout, or a run hung with the wrong pitch. Cleaning it again will not help.
This is the version of the overflow problem that actually tells you something. If the trough is clear and water still comes over the front, you have eliminated the easy answer. What is left is geometry, and geometry does not fix itself.
Why this matters more than the clogged version
A clogged gutter is a maintenance issue. A clean gutter that overflows is a design or installation issue, which means it has been happening since the day that run went up, and it will keep happening every hard rain until somebody changes something physical.
People often live with this for years, cleaning twice a season out of habit, without ever registering that the cleaning was never the fix.
Cause one: the trough is too small for the roof
Gutter size is not decorative. Capacity is measured as drainage area, meaning how much roof the system can take. This Old House rates a 5 inch K style trough at about 5,520 square feet and a 6 inch at about 7,960, roughly 44 percent more roof for one extra inch.
Worth knowing before you pay to size up: the downspout matters more. A 2x3 outlet handles about 600 square feet and a 3x4 about 1,200, so switching outlet size doubles the drainage. On a recent garage build in Phillips we went the other way deliberately, putting 3x4 downspouts on a 5 inch trough so the outlet was never the restriction.
Two situations put a 5 inch gutter underwater:
- A large roof area draining to one run. The bigger the plane feeding a given length of gutter, the more water arrives per minute.
- A steep pitch. Steep roofs deliver water fast. Some of it arrives with enough speed to shoot straight over the trough, which is why a steep roof can overshoot a gutter that is not even full.
Cause two: not enough downspout
The trough only buffers. The downspout is the exit. A long run with a single downspout means every gallon has to travel the length of the gutter before it can leave, and during a burst it simply cannot clear fast enough.
Adding a second downspout is often the cheapest real fix on this list, because it does not require replacing anything. It splits the run into two shorter drainage paths.
Watch during the next storm. If the water stacks up and comes over near the far end from the downspout, that is your answer.
Cause three: pitch and hanging
A gutter should fall gently and consistently toward the outlet. Problems show up three ways:
- Too flat, and water sits in the trough instead of moving. Standing water after a rain is the giveaway.
- A low spot, where one section sagged or was hung slightly off. Water pools there and comes over that one point every time while the rest of the run behaves.
- Pulled loose at one end, which creates a low spot the same way.
The tell for pitch problems is that the overflow is always in the same place, and that place is not the downspout.
The diagnostic, in order
- Confirm it is genuinely clear, downspout included. A trough can look clean from a ladder while the downspout elbow is packed solid.
- Watch a real storm and note where it comes over.
- After the rain stops, look for standing water. Standing water means pitch.
- Count downspouts against the length of the run.
- Compare the roof size and steepness against the trough size.
Where this bites in Omaha
The metro’s rain arrives in short heavy bursts rather than long soaks, which is exactly the pattern that exposes an undersized system. A gutter that copes fine with an ordinary rain will still fail three or four times a year when a real storm comes through, and those are the times water ends up against the foundation.
There is also a housing age split worth knowing. 5 inch is the long standing residential default, and older homes generally got it regardless of roof size. Newer builds tend toward larger, steeper rooflines. A 5 inch trough that was correct for a 1960s ranch is not automatically correct for a 2005 two story.

We would look at the roofline first, because the three causes need three different fixes and guessing is expensive. Sometimes it is one added downspout. Sometimes it is re-hanging a run to correct the pitch. Sometimes it is stepping up to 6 inch.
